Crust:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup all-purpose flour

Filling:
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Topping:
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 cups Macintosh apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup sliced almonds

Preheat oven to 450F. Grease and flour a 9-inch springform pan.

Crust: In a mixing bowl, cream the butter. Add the sugar and vanilla. Blend in the flour. The mixture will be crumbly. Pat the dough onto the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of the prepared pan.

Filling: Combine the softened cream cheese with the sugar and mix well. Blend in the egg and vanilla until the mixture is smooth. Pour it into the dough-lined pan.

Topping: Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Toss the apples in the sugar mixture. Spoon the apples over the cream cheese layer and sprinkle with the nuts.
Bake at 450F. for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 400F. and continue to bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the apples and the almonds are brown and the top is set. Loosen the torte from the rim of the pan. Cool before removing cake from pan. Serve at room temperature.
