1/2 cup sliced red onion
4 large ripe tomatoes (2 pounds), cut in quarters or eighths
1 tablespoon firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup good, fruity olive oil
1 tablespoon minced fresh basil

Toss onion, tomatoes, brown sugar, vinegar, salt, pepper, olive oil and basil together in a large glass bowl, cover, and let marinate for several hours at room temperature, tossing every once in a while.
